Process of creating handcrafted ceramics

Behind every finished piece are many hands, decisions and stages that often go unseen. The process of creating handcrafted ceramics transforms raw material through craftsmanship, colour and fire. At Art Antic l’Alcora , every project is crafted by hand, with careful attention to each stage of the process until the final piece is complete
From Clay to Mural: the Artisanal Process at Art Antic

Ceramics go through several stages before reaching their final destination. Preparation, shaping, drying, firing and glazing are all part of a process in which each stage influences the next. Our hands-on approach allows us to respond to the specific requirements of each project, creating handcrafted ceramic tiles and bespoke pieces tailored to each design.
Before becoming ceramics, each piece is material in transformation.
Clay selection and preparation of the raw material
Everything begins with clay. Preparing it correctly is essential to ensure it can be properly worked and shaped into the desired form. In this first stage of the handcrafted ceramic production process, we prepare the raw material for the stages that follow, giving it the care and attention that craftsmanship requires.
The quality of a piece begins long before you see the finished result.
Hand-shaped, piece by piece
This is where our craftspeople’s hands take centre stage. Each piece is shaped by hand according to the specific requirements of the design we are bringing to life. This artisanal process allows us to create bespoke formats, reliefs and solutions, while preserving the distinctive character of handcrafted ceramics, where every detail matters.
Hands turn an idea into something tangible.
Natural drying and initial firings
Before entering the kiln, the pieces need to gradually release their moisture. The drying process requires time and careful control. Then comes firing, an essential stage in the handcrafted ceramic process that transforms the clay and prepares each piece for the next stages of production.
In ceramics, respecting the time each stage requires is also part of the craft.
Glazing, colour and handcrafted finishes

Glaze introduces colour, depth and character. Its handcrafted application, combined with the firing process, creates subtle nuances and small variations that are part of the visual richness of handmade ceramics. This allows us to ensure that each finish reflects the aesthetic vision of every project.
Colour doesn’t cover the piece: it reveals its character.
From the workshop to the finished mural: assembly and installation

When we create a ceramic mural, each piece forms part of a larger composition. Once the different stages of production are complete, the entire composition is ready to bring the original design to life in ceramic and take its place in the space for which it was conceived.
Piece by piece, the image finds its place.
